Data compression is the reduction of the number of bits that should be saved or transmitted and this process is rather important in the web hosting field since data located on hard disk drives is often compressed to take less space. You'll find various algorithms for compressing information and they offer different effectiveness based upon the content. Some of them remove only the redundant bits, so that no data will be lost, while others erase unnecessary bits, which leads to worse quality when your data is uncompressed. This method requires plenty of processing time, therefore an internet hosting server should be powerful enough in order to be able to compress and uncompress data immediately. An illustration how binary code may be compressed is by "remembering" that there are five sequential 1s, for example, in contrast to storing all five 1s.
Data Compression in Web Hosting
The ZFS file system which operates on our cloud web hosting platform employs a compression algorithm named LZ4. The latter is significantly faster and better than any other algorithm you will find, especially for compressing and uncompressing non-binary data i.e. internet content. LZ4 even uncompresses data quicker than it is read from a hard drive, which improves the overall performance of websites hosted on ZFS-based platforms. Since the algorithm compresses data quite well and it does that quickly, we can generate several backups of all the content kept in the web hosting accounts on our servers every day. Both your content and its backups will need reduced space and since both ZFS and LZ4 work very quickly, the backup generation will not influence the performance of the servers where your content will be stored.
Data Compression in Semi-dedicated Servers
If you host your sites in a semi-dedicated server account with our company, you will be able to experience the advantages of LZ4 - the powerful compression algorithm employed by the ZFS file system which is behind our advanced cloud web hosting platform. What distinguishes LZ4 from all of the other algorithms out there is that it has a higher compression ratio and it is much faster, in particular when it comes to uncompressing web content. It does that even faster than uncompressed data can be read from a hard drive, so your Internet sites will perform faster. The higher speed is at the expense of using a lot of CPU processing time, that is not an issue for our platform since it consists of a large number of clusters working together. Besides the improved performance, you'll have multiple daily backup copies at your disposal, so you will be able to restore any deleted content with several clicks. The backups are available for an entire month and we can afford to store them because they take considerably less space than standard backups.
